Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the nationwide Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination Programme from Ajmer, Rajasthan. The initiative aims to protect adolescent girls from cervical cancer by administering a single dose of the HPV vaccine.
Here are the most important questions answered by doctors:
1️⃣ Which HPV Vaccine Is Being Given?
The government is administering Gardasil (quadrivalent vaccine), which protects against HPV types 16 and 18 (linked to cervical cancer) and types 6 and 11 (which cause genital warts).
India’s indigenous vaccine Cervavac, developed by the Serum Institute of India, currently requires two doses as long-term single-dose data is still being evaluated.
2️⃣ Who Is Eligible for the HPV Vaccine?
- Ideal age group: 9–14 years (best immune response)
- Catch-up vaccination: 15–26 years
- 27–45 years: Individual medical decision
Even sexually active women can benefit, as the vaccine protects against multiple HPV strains.
3️⃣ Who Gets It Free?
The government is providing free vaccination to 14-year-old girls across all States and Union Territories.
4️⃣ Is Parental Consent Required?
Yes. The vaccination is voluntary and requires informed parental/guardian consent.
5️⃣ Where Will It Be Available?
Free vaccination will be available at:
- Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (PHCs)
- Community Health Centres
- District Hospitals
- Government Medical Colleges
6️⃣ Is One Dose Enough?
According to updated global guidelines, one dose of Gardasil is sufficient for girls aged 9–14 years.
Doctors explain that at this age:
- Immunity response is strong
- A single dose provides durable protection
- It improves affordability and accessibility in large populations
However, Cervavac currently requires two doses spaced six months apart.
7️⃣ Is the HPV Vaccine Safe?
Yes. Doctors confirm HPV vaccines are extremely safe.
Common mild side effects may include:
- Pain or redness at injection site
- Mild fever
- Headache
There is no evidence linking the HPV vaccine to infertility or early menopause.
8️⃣ Should Boys Also Get the HPV Vaccine?
Yes, experts recommend vaccination for boys as well.
HPV infection in males can lead to:
- Genital warts
- Anal cancer
- Penile cancer
- Throat and mouth cancers
Vaccinating boys also reduces viral transmission.
9️⃣ What Is the Cost in Private Hospitals?
In the private market:
- Gardasil-4 costs approximately ₹3,927 per dose
- Below 15 years: 2 doses required
- Above 15 years: 3 doses required
Why HPV Vaccination Matters
HPV is one of the leading causes of cervical cancer, which remains a major health burden in India. By targeting adolescents before exposure to the virus, the government aims to significantly reduce future cancer cases.
This nationwide programme marks a major public health step toward cancer prevention and women’s health empowerment.
