India Plans AI ‘Data City’ on Massive Scale to Power Digital Growth

February 16, 2026
Visakhapatnam proposed AI data city infrastructure project

Visakhapatnam is being positioned as India’s next major AI data and infrastructure hub.

As India accelerates its push to compete with global AI leaders like the United States and China, Andhra Pradesh is positioning Visakhapatnam as the centerpiece of an ambitious artificial intelligence “data city” project.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh, who says the AI revolution presents a defining opportunity for India.

“The AI revolution is here, and we must embrace it,” Lokesh said ahead of an international AI summit in New Delhi.

🌏 Why Visakhapatnam?

Visakhapatnam — popularly known as Vizag — is a southeastern port city with a population of nearly 2 million. Traditionally known for its beaches and cricket stadium, the city is now being pitched as a major digital infrastructure hub.

Plans include:

  • A 100-kilometre AI data ecosystem
  • Submarine internet cable landing stations linking India to Singapore
  • Large-scale AI data centers
  • Manufacturing clusters for servers and cooling systems

Lokesh said the vision extends beyond data storage to creating a complete AI industrial ecosystem.

💰 Multi-Billion Dollar Investments

According to the state government, Andhra Pradesh has secured investment agreements worth $175 billion across 760 projects.

Among the major proposed investments:

  • A reported $15 billion AI infrastructure project by Google
  • An $11 billion joint data center venture involving Reliance Industries, Brookfield Corporation, and Digital Realty
  • A $17.5 billion AI infrastructure commitment announced by Microsoft

The scale of these investments signals India’s intent to become a major AI infrastructure powerhouse.

⚡ Energy, Water and Nuclear Backing

Data centers require enormous electricity and cooling capacity. Andhra Pradesh is planning to meet these needs through:

  • Large-scale power generation
  • Tapping surplus monsoon water draining into the Bay of Bengal
  • Proposed nuclear power expansion at Kovvada

The Union government has granted in-principle approval for six 1.2-gigawatt nuclear power plants in the state, which could support future digital infrastructure growth.

📊 Can Data Cities Create Jobs?

Critics argue that large data centers may not generate proportionate employment. However, Lokesh insists that technological revolutions historically create more jobs than they eliminate — provided nations embrace change.

The state is also offering land at highly subsidised rates to attract global investors and fast-track industrial development.

🇮🇳 India’s Global AI Position

India currently ranks among the top countries in AI capabilities based on innovation indicators such as patents and funding. However, experts note that the country still faces challenges in high-end computing access and advanced AI research.

The proposed AI data city aims to bridge that gap by combining infrastructure, manufacturing, and digital connectivity into a single integrated ecosystem.

With ambitious targets including six gigawatts of data center capacity, Andhra Pradesh is betting on speed and scale to cement its role in India’s AI transformation.
