Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has announced its entry into photovoltaic (PV) ingot and wafer manufacturing with a planned investment of approximately ₹6,500 crore, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s upstream solar manufacturing ecosystem.
The company plans to establish a manufacturing facility with a total planned capacity of up to 10 GW, which will be developed in two phases of 5 GW each. The move is aimed at strengthening backward integration across the solar value chain and reducing dependence on imported raw materials, particularly from China.
PV ingots and wafers are critical components used in the manufacturing of solar cells and modules. With domestic demand for solar manufacturing rapidly increasing, the company believes the investment will enhance supply chain resilience, improve operational efficiency, and support India’s clean energy and self-reliance goals.
The proposed project aligns with the Government of India’s push for domestic solar manufacturing under initiatives such as Atmanirbhar Bharat and upcoming policy frameworks supporting indigenous renewable energy production.
Industry experts view the development as a significant milestone in India’s transition toward a fully integrated solar manufacturing ecosystem, especially at a time when the country is focusing on expanding local capacity for critical solar components.
