West Bengal Electoral Roll Verification

West Bengal completes Special Intensive Revision ahead of Assembly elections.

The Election Commission of India is set to publish West Bengal’s final electoral roll on February 28 following the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a large-scale verification exercise conducted ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.

The revised roll will list 7.08 crore voters, reflecting significant changes after months of scrutiny, hearings, and field verification.

📌 How to Check Your Name in the Electoral Roll

Voters can verify their status through:

  • ECI website (eci.gov.in)
  • Chief Electoral Officer, West Bengal portal (ceowestbengal.wb.gov.in)
  • ECI Net mobile application

Search using:

  • Name
  • EPIC (Voter ID) number

Status Categories in the Final Roll

  • Approved – Verification complete
  • Deleted – Name removed after scrutiny
  • ⚖️ Under Adjudication – Case pending judicial review

Hard copies will also be available through Booth Level Officers (BLOs).

📊 Key Figures After Revision

  • Initial voter count: 7.66 crore
  • Names deleted: 58 lakh
  • Final electorate: 7.08 crore

Additionally:

  • Around 60 lakh voters are marked “Under Adjudication”
  • Newly enrolled voters will appear in a supplementary list

🔍 Figures Flagged During Scrutiny

Election Commission sources indicated:

  • 1.20 crore voters flagged for “logical discrepancies”
  • 32 lakh classified as “unmapped”
  • 4.98 lakh failed to appear for hearings
  • 1.63 lakh identified as “fake”

Nearly 1.67 crore electors were covered in hearings, underscoring the scale of the exercise — the first such intensive revision in West Bengal since 2002.

🏛️ Political Reactions

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns over the scale of deletions, alleging that over one crore names may have been removed.

The Trinamool Congress has criticised the process, drawing comparisons with NRC-style verification, while election authorities maintain the revision was conducted to clean and update electoral records.

🗓️ Why This Matters

The publication of the final electoral roll is a crucial milestone ahead of the state Assembly elections. Electoral rolls determine who is eligible to vote, making accuracy and transparency critical for the democratic process.

With over seven crore voters on the revised list, the SIR exercise has become one of the most extensive electoral verification drives in the state’s recent history.
