Himanta Biswa Sarma Inaugurates ₹376 Crore Flyover in Guwahati to Ease Urban Traffic

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inaugurated a major flyover project worth ₹376 crore in Guwahati, marking another significant step in the city’s ongoing urban mobility and infrastructure modernisation drive.

The newly opened flyover is expected to substantially reduce traffic congestion, improve travel efficiency, and strengthen connectivity across key urban corridors in Guwahati, which has been witnessing rapid population growth and increasing vehicular movement in recent years.

According to state government officials, the flyover has been developed as part of Assam’s broader infrastructure expansion programme aimed at upgrading road networks, reducing urban bottlenecks, and improving transport efficiency in the North East’s largest metropolitan centre. The project is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters by easing congestion at some of the city’s busiest intersections.

The flyover is strategically important because Guwahati serves as the primary commercial, administrative, logistics, and transportation gateway for the entire North Eastern region. Rising urbanisation, expanding trade activity, and increasing vehicle ownership have significantly increased pressure on the city’s road infrastructure over the past decade.

During the inauguration, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the Assam government’s continued focus on accelerating infrastructure development across roads, bridges, urban transport systems, airports, and logistics connectivity to support long-term economic growth in the state.
Guwahati has emerged as one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres in the North East due to increasing investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, tourism, trade, and industrial development. Multiple transport projects including ring roads, elevated corridors, bridges across the Brahmaputra River, and highway upgrades are currently under development in and around the city.

The state government has been aggressively pursuing urban infrastructure upgrades to improve mobility and support future growth. Several ongoing projects are focused on decongesting core urban areas, improving suburban connectivity, and integrating regional transport networks with national highway and logistics corridors.

Urban infrastructure experts noted that flyovers and grade-separated corridors are becoming increasingly important for rapidly expanding Indian cities where traditional road networks are struggling to accommodate rising traffic volumes. Efficient urban mobility infrastructure is critical for reducing travel time, fuel consumption, and economic losses caused by congestion.

The newly inaugurated flyover is expected to complement several upcoming infrastructure projects planned for Guwahati under Assam’s long-term urban development strategy. Authorities are also focusing on improving drainage systems, public transport infrastructure, smart traffic management, and multimodal connectivity within the city.
Industry observers believe continued infrastructure investment in Guwahati could significantly strengthen the city’s role as a major economic and logistics hub for the North East while improving quality of life and supporting regional economic integration.
