Jindal Steel Ramps Up Syngas to Cut Fuel Imports and Emissions

Jindal Steel said yesterday that it has expanded the use of coal gasification across its steelmaking operations, aiming to reduce reliance on imported fuels and cut emissions intensity. According to the company’s regulatory filing, it has set up a coal gasification-based direct reduced iron (DRI) plant that utilizes syngas for iron production and has expanded the use of syngas to its galvanizing and colour coating line furnaces. This development comes in response to shortages of natural gas, LPG, and propane, the company added.

Widespread Use of Sygas in Steel Production

The company also stated the introduction of syngas injection in its blast furnace operations, a move expected to reduce dependence on imported coking coal and decrease carbon emissions per ton of steel. Integrating syngas throughout multiple stages of steel production can boost operational efficiency while reducing reliance on imported fuels and cutting associated costs.

P.K. Biju Nair, Executive Director, Angul, said, “Synthesis gas derived from indigenous coal can substitute imported methanol, ammonia, ammonium nitrate, and LNG. India should leverage its abundant coal reserves to secure low-carbon growth for the future while curbing foreign exchange outflows.” He noted that coal gasification, when paired with carbon capture, utilisation, and storage, could help lower emission intensity and facilitate compliance with carbon-related trade regulations.

The firm stated that employing domestic coal and gasification technologies is part of its broader strategy to balance costs, address supply constraints, and meet environmental considerations in steel production.
