The Karnataka government is planning to develop a ₹20 billion (₹2,000 crore) aerospace hub at the HAL Airport campus in Bengaluru, as part of a larger strategy to position the city as a global aviation and aerospace powerhouse.
The proposed hub will be developed around the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) airport ecosystem, focusing on creating an integrated cluster that brings together aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), research and development, and advanced aviation technologies under one framework.
The initiative is aligned with a broader long-term vision to transform the HAL campus into a multi-functional aerospace district, combining defence aviation, civil aerospace, and emerging technologies such as drones and next-generation air mobility systems. A larger masterplan under consideration aims to redevelop hundreds of acres into a high-value aviation ecosystem with global benchmarks.
The planned investment is expected to strengthen Bengaluru’s already established position as India’s leading aerospace hub, supported by the presence of major organisations like HAL and a growing network of global aviation companies. The hub will focus on high-value manufacturing, skill development, and innovation-driven growth, creating opportunities across the aerospace value chain.
Officials have indicated that the project will also contribute significantly to job creation, technology development, and export potential, while supporting India’s broader push for self-reliance in aviation and defence manufacturing. Parallel developments, including expansion of aerospace production capabilities and MRO infrastructure in the region, further reinforce this momentum.
However, the project will require clearances from central authorities, particularly because the HAL airport operates under defence jurisdiction. Regulatory considerations, land use planning, and coordination between multiple agencies will be critical to moving the project forward.
The development reflects a wider national trend, where states are actively investing in aerospace clusters and aviation infrastructure to capture a share of the rapidly growing global aviation market.
If implemented as planned, the HAL aerospace hub could play a transformative role in elevating Bengaluru’s status alongside global aviation centres, while strengthening India’s position in the global aerospace industry.
