“For more than 125 years, we have stood for safety, reliability and innovation. mayr® power transmission bundles its know-how and decades of experience in the offshore sector in our drive components, mainly safety brakes for pitch and azimuth drives. The safety brakes for wind power plants deliver maximum fail-safe function, minimum downtimes, and constructional design diversity, while also reducing operating costs.”

How do mayr safety brakes and torque limiters enhance reliability and safety in modern wind turbine applications?

Wind power plants around the globe are equipped with our electromagnetic safety brakes. As the leading international manufacturer for wind power brakes, we provide the ROBA-stop M® brakes as safety brakes especially developed and tested for yaw and pitch drives. All brake components are reliably dimensioned and produced only from high-quality, tested and proven materials. Our brakes have been dimensioned to reliably achieve the specified braking torque under all operating conditions which might occur, regardless of e.g. the air humidity or the ambient temperature, depending on the region. In general, the company always pays attention to careful quality control. This includes quality assurance measures during the design process as well as a comprehensive final inspection. An electronic database in which the measurement values are archived together with the corresponding serial numbers of a product guarantee 100 percent traceability.

With wind turbines increasing in size and load, how is mayr adapting its drive and safety technologies to meet these evolving demands?

The challenges in renewable energy production are constantly changing, and of course we keep adapting to these changes as we always have throughout our company’s history. Our ROBA-stop M® brake portfolio already covers a large range of different sizes and design variants in order to adapt to the specific needs of the wind-energy industry. We are also currently developing a new size of our tried and tested ROBA-stop M®, which is targeted at heavy-duty applications. So, you should definitely watch this space.

How do mayr solutions help reduce mechanical failure risks and downtime under extreme wind operating conditions?

For more than 125 years, we have stood for safety, reliability and innovation. mayr® power transmission bundles its know-how and decades of experience in the offshore sector in our drive components, mainly safety brakes for pitch and azimuth drives. The safety brakes for wind power plants deliver maximum fail-safe function, minimum downtimes, and constructional design diversity, while also reducing operating costs. With our ROBA-stop M® pitch brake, for example, we set new standards. A wide range of torque limiters is also available. They extend from overload systems for wind turbine gearboxes to torque limiters for climbing aid drives in the tower and switchable clutches for the drives of maintenance and installation platforms, right up to high-performance large clutches for gearbox test stands.

What role do smart monitoring and predictive maintenance play in mayr’s mechanical safety solutions for renewable energy assets?

The monitoring of safety brakes is becoming increasingly important in the wind power sector. We can provide it without the use of sensors, using the retrofittable ROBA® brake-checker® module. The module is not only interesting for extended data exchange, but also as a classic monitoring solution. It detects the movement of the armature disk through extended analysis of current and voltage, and knows what condition the brake is in. In addition to monitoring the switching condition and critical coil temperature, the ROBA® brake-checker® also performs preventative function monitoring. Especially when it comes to offshore applications, this is a decisive advantage, as maintenance work can be efficiently bundled and carried out at exactly the right time – e.g. not too early and thus possibly too frequently.

How is sustainability through energy efficiency and climate-neutral manufacturing integrated into mayr’s product design and operation?

Sustainability is key for us and our operations. You do not need to take only our word for this: Within just a few months of opening our new plant in Halol, we were able to secure three international certifications concurrently. Our certifications in ISO 9001 (Quality), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), and ISO 14001 (Environmental) – which is especially meaningful regarding your question – speak to our commitment to the highest standards.

The fact that we managed to get certified almost immediately also shows that our international processes work and that we are able to roll out the proverbial mayr® safety, reliability and innovation everywhere on the globe.

How important is the Indian market for mayr, particularly in supporting the country’s expanding wind and renewable energy capacity?

The Indian market is extremely interesting because of the wide range of possible applications. Wind energy is one of the most important areas, with renewable energy on the rise and India being a key market. We bring extensive experience in wind power technology to the table and can offer real added value with our products. We have not only decades of experience in the offshore sector, but also in onshore applications in some of the most demanding environments worldwide, from extremely cold conditions to various grades of humidity. All this makes us more than prepared to support India’s aspirations in this promising field.

Looking ahead, how does mayr see its role as a technology enabler in the global energy transition?

We have been the reliable partner for our customers for more than 125 years, and that is how we still see ourselves. And this holds true for customers within the renewable energy sector, too. Our global strategy and diverse plant structure position us to master complexity and varying levels of technology. By using identical test benches in all our plants, we guarantee consistent, high-quality standards locally. Our guiding principle is ‘Many locations, one quality’. Every product that leaves one of our plants is tested to the same global standards, and the results are meticulously documented. This comprehensive control is the cornerstone of our quality promise and an offer to every company pushing the global energy transition.
