Omar Abdullah reviewed the progress of the Sungal Tunnel project on the Jammu-Poonch Highway, as the strategically important infrastructure project approaches completion.
During his visit en route to Nowshera, the Chief Minister inspected ongoing construction activities and assessed the pace of work at the site. Officials briefed him on various aspects of the project, including excavation, structural development, and associated road connectivity works.
The Sungal Tunnel, spanning approximately 2.79 km, is a key component of the Jammu–Poonch highway upgrade and is expected to be completed later this year. The project is being executed by the Border Roads Organisation and is currently in its advanced stages.
Once operational, the tunnel will significantly improve connectivity between Akhnoor and Poonch, ensuring more reliable, all-weather access in the region. It forms part of the larger “golden arc road,” a nearly 200-km strategic corridor connecting south Kashmir with key western districts and border areas.
The Sungal Tunnel is one of four major tunnels planned along this corridor, alongside Kandi, Naushera, and Bhimber Gali. While the Naushera tunnel has already been completed, work on the remaining tunnels is progressing steadily.
The project is expected to enhance regional connectivity, improve mobility in difficult terrain, and support both civilian and strategic transportation needs in Jammu and Kashmir.
