Sarbananda Sonowal Reviews Progress of National Maritime Heritage Complex; Phase 1 Targeted for July 2026 Completion

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal has reviewed the progress of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) being developed at Lothal and directed officials to complete Phase 1 of the project by July 2026.

During the review meeting, the minister instructed project teams to accelerate construction activities and ensure the timely completion of critical works, including mural installations, ceiling fabrication, flooring, panels, and thematic interior development. He emphasised strict adherence to timelines while maintaining high-quality standards across all components of the project.

The NMHC is being developed as a world-class maritime heritage destination aimed at showcasing India’s rich maritime history, ancient trade routes, naval legacy, and civilisational connection with the seas. The project is considered one of the country’s flagship cultural and tourism infrastructure initiatives.

Phase 1A of the complex, which is targeted for completion by July 2026, includes six museum galleries, the Lothal township experience zone, aquatic theming, common area thematic installations, a jetty walkway, and displays featuring Indian Navy artefacts.

The minister also highlighted the importance of international collaboration in the project and called for stronger engagement with maritime nations and ASEAN countries to showcase shared oceanic heritage and historical maritime linkages with India. According to officials, India has already signed multiple Memorandums of Understanding with countries including the Netherlands, UAE, South Korea, Germany, and others for cooperation related to the complex.

Sonowal further stressed the need for coordination among ministries such as tourism and culture to position the NMHC as a major global cultural and tourism hub. He also directed officials to prepare a comprehensive calendar of events and activities in collaboration with state and national tourism agencies to boost visitor engagement after commissioning.

The upcoming Phase 1B of the project is expected to involve an investment of around ₹3,000 crore and will include additional galleries, a lighthouse museum, a dome theatre, and other immersive maritime attractions.
The minister also reviewed the prevailing situation in the Gulf region and instructed officials to ensure safe passage and operational continuity for India-bound ships amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainties affecting maritime routes.
