Vizhinjam Port Set for Direct Cargo Movement to NH-66 as Key Approach Link Nears Completion

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala is on the verge of enabling direct cargo movement to National Highway-66 (NH-66), as the critical approach road linking the port to the highway nears completion.

The project involves a 1.7-km dedicated road corridor connecting the port directly to NH-66, which is now in its final stages. Once operational, it will allow seamless movement of container trucks and heavy cargo vehicles, marking a major step forward in the port’s transition from transshipment operations to full-fledged gateway cargo handling.

Authorities have indicated that connectivity works on the temporary approach road are almost complete, and the link is expected to be commissioned shortly. This will enable road-based cargo evacuation directly from the port, eliminating existing logistical bottlenecks and improving turnaround times.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has already approved the connection between the approach road and NH-66, including necessary junction improvements and safety measures. The temporary road will act as an immediate solution until permanent infrastructure such as a ₹360-crore cloverleaf interchange is developed to handle future traffic volumes.
The enhanced connectivity is expected to significantly boost the port’s operational efficiency. Currently functioning primarily as a transshipment hub, Vizhinjam is preparing to expand into gateway cargo operations, allowing direct import-export (EXIM) movement to and from the hinterland.

Strategically located near international shipping routes, the port is positioned to become a major logistics hub for South India. Improved road connectivity to NH-66 will not only facilitate faster cargo evacuation but also strengthen links with industrial clusters, logistics networks, and inland markets across Kerala and neighboring states.

In the longer term, additional infrastructure such as a dedicated rail link to Balaramapuram and expanded port capacity under upcoming phases will further enhance multimodal connectivity and cargo handling capabilities.
The nearing completion of the approach road marks a crucial milestone in the port’s infrastructure readiness, paving the way for efficient, high-volume cargo movement and stronger integration with India’s national logistics network.
