Volvo CE Begins Production of A30 Electric and A40 Electric Haulers, Marking Industry First

Volvo Construction Equipment has commenced the serial production of its A30 Electric and A40 Electric articulated haulers, becoming the first company in the world to manufacture electric articulated haulers in this size class at scale.

This milestone represents a major advancement in the electrification of heavy construction equipment, as the company transitions these machines from concept and pilot phases into full industrial production. The models were first unveiled at Bauma 2025, where they generated strong interest from customers across quarrying, mining, and infrastructure sectors.

The new electric haulers are being produced at Volvo CE’s Braås facility in Sweden, a historically significant site where the world’s first articulated hauler was originally developed. The start of electric production at this location highlights both the company’s engineering legacy and its shift toward sustainable innovation.

The A30 Electric and A40 Electric come with payload capacities of approximately 29 tonnes and 39 tonnes respectively, placing them among the largest electric machines in Volvo CE’s portfolio. These machines are designed for high-demand applications such as quarrying, mining, and heavy construction, where equipment utilisation is intensive and energy consumption is significant.

Powered by advanced lithium-ion battery systems, the haulers can deliver up to 4–6 hours of operational runtime per charge, depending on site conditions and usage patterns. In certain optimized conditions, such as downhill load transport, runtime can extend even further. Fast-charging capability enables the machines to recharge from 20% to 80% in approximately one hour using high-capacity DC charging solutions, ensuring minimal downtime on site.

A key advantage of these electric haulers is their ability to deliver zero tailpipe emissions, significantly reducing environmental impact. When powered by renewable energy sources, they can achieve substantial lifecycle CO₂ reductions compared to diesel counterparts, making them particularly suitable for environmentally sensitive operations such as underground mining and urban infrastructure projects.

Despite the shift to electrification, Volvo CE has maintained performance parity with conventional diesel models, ensuring the machines offer the same off-road capability, durability, and hauling efficiency expected in demanding environments. The machines are also built on the company’s new-generation platform, incorporating enhanced safety features, improved visibility, advanced operator assistance systems, and simplified maintenance architecture.

Highlighting the significance of this development, Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE, stated:
“Starting serial production of electric articulated haulers of this size is a proud moment for Volvo CE. It shows that our ambition to lead the transformation of our industry is backed by real execution.”

The first batch of these electric haulers is expected to be delivered to customers in markets such as the UK and Norway, with further deliveries planned across Europe in the latter half of 2026. This phased rollout reflects growing market readiness for zero-emission heavy equipment solutions.
With this development, Volvo CE reinforces its long-term strategy of expanding its electric equipment portfolio and accelerating the transition toward sustainable construction practices, positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in the global construction equipment industry.
