Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), a Navratna Defence Public Sector Undertaking, has secured a contract worth ₹1,251 crore (excluding taxes) from the Ministry of Defence for the supply of a Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) to the Indian Army. The order marks a significant advancement in India’s indigenous defence capabilities and electronic warfare infrastructure.
The GBMES is a state-of-the-art, fully indigenous system designed and developed by the Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL), Hyderabad, and will be manufactured by BEL. The system is engineered to strengthen the Indian Army’s operational preparedness by enhancing real-time intelligence and surveillance capabilities.
This advanced, network-centric intelligence system is capable of detecting, identifying, and locating a wide range of radar signals. In addition, it can intercept and analyze communication signals, thereby providing comprehensive electronic intelligence support in complex battlefield environments.
The deployment of GBMES is expected to significantly improve situational awareness and bolster the country’s air defence mechanisms. By integrating cutting-edge indigenous technologies, the system reinforces India’s focus on self-reliance in defence production while addressing critical national security requirements.
The contract underscores BEL’s continued role as a key contributor to India’s defence electronics ecosystem and highlights the growing emphasis on advanced electronic warfare solutions within the armed forces.
