Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal chaired a high-level review meeting to assess India’s roadmap for achieving the ambitious $2 trillion export target by 2030–31, with a strong focus on MSME participation and sector-specific strategies.
During the review, the minister emphasised the need for a structured, sector-wise action plan covering key industries such as engineering goods, electronics, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, and services. The government has developed a detailed monitoring framework to track progress and ensure targeted interventions across sectors.
A major thrust of the discussion was on strengthening the role of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in the export ecosystem. Goyal directed officials to ensure that the benefits of export promotion schemes reach grassroots exporters, especially first-time and small businesses, enabling wider participation in global trade.
The minister also highlighted the importance of import substitution alongside export growth, asking departments to identify priority sectors and products where domestic manufacturing can be scaled up to reduce dependence on imports while boosting outbound shipments.
To improve execution, the roadmap includes the development of an IT-enabled monitoring system for real-time tracking of export performance, along with mechanisms for timely review at senior administrative levels.
Further, the government is focusing on strengthening critical enablers such as overseas logistics, warehousing, testing, certification, and market access support, particularly for MSMEs, to enhance their global competitiveness.
India’s export strategy also includes initiatives like Districts as Export Hubs, promotion of e-commerce exports, and expansion of trade facilitation infrastructure, aimed at diversifying markets and increasing the exporter base.
The review comes at a time when India’s total exports have already crossed $860 billion, and the government is positioning this momentum as a foundation to achieve the long-term $2 trillion export milestone under the Viksit Bharat vision.
The meeting underscores the government’s push towards a data-driven, sector-focused, and MSME-inclusive export strategy, aimed at strengthening India’s position in global trade while ensuring broad-based economic growth.
